Personal Trainer: Cooking brings gourmet cooking from around the globe to your Nintendo DS. It features a DS Chef, your own private cooking instructor who talks you through 245+ recipes from over 30 countries worldwide. It's a combination of interactive cookbook and live cooking demonstration that'll have you cooking like a pro, even if you've never lifted a ladle before. With so many recipes, you can find something new and tasty to make no matter what you're in the mood for. You can search a map by country to find regional dishes or select options for low-calorie foods, specific ingredients or short cooking times. Each recipe contains step-by-step directions and photos to make it possible to prepare dishes you've never tried before. Use the stylus or simple voice commands to "turn the page." Hands covered in batter? Keep your DS clean using voice commands to continue to the next page, repeat a step, go back, and more. A tap of the touch screen lets you adjust the serving size automatically, and users can write and save cooking notes, just as they would in a paper recipe book. Recipes include photos of the dish as well as instructional videos on how to perform different cooking techniques, such as how to chop an onion or clean a fish. Users can access a handy reference function to explain unfamiliar terms and cooking techniques when they appear. The software includes a timer and calculator, as well as a search function to help you find what you're looking for. Cooking Guide also includes an ingredient checklist to use as a shopping list. Just put a ? mark next to the items you need and bring your Nintendo DS to the grocery store. You and the Chef will collaborate on a wide variety of recipes, with videos of techniques, explanations of ingredients, and expert advice. With its innovative interface and the interactivity that only the DS can provide, it's a perfect learning tool for the budding chef. As you browse recip

Summary: Not a game but its still pretty cool
Comment: We got this for the DS and played around with it a bit but have yet actually used it to cook. It looks very simple I like that it can keep a grocery list for the meals you want to cook. For the price we got it I think it was a very good deal.

Comment: I'm not Betty Crocker by any means, cooking isn't easy for me but I get by. I find this software, which is really more like a talking cookbook, pretty easy to use. The recipes are a nice array of international food, so you get to try out new stuff. Features I like are you can select foods you don't eat, but the device will still give you those recipe options (with a symbol saying if a recipe contains 'banned' ingredients). I like this because some recipes can be adapted, so it's nice to still have them as options.

The little videos and instructions that give more details on steps is handy. I've been using the voice command, which is touchy. Banging pots and pans, conversations and other noises will be registered and it'll think you'll want to go to the next step, last step, etc., or say it doesn't understand. I found it wasn't too hard to use the stylus instead.

I suggest you look over the steps first to see the order they are in, as the timing of the different steps is not efficient. I was preparing a recipe the other day that instructed boiling the potatoes way too late and prep time would have taken forever if I'd waited for the prompt. So I got the potatoes started before I did step 1 (cutting the onions).

This is a fun cookbook, but can use some improvements.

Comment: Personal Trainer: Cooking
This is not only cute, but foolproof. Can turn anyone into a chef even if they are all thumbs. This little cartoon icon talks to you allowing you to ask for repeated instructions/explanations. This can be used almost daily in the kitchen. It has instructional videos as well as stored shopping checklists. The foreign recipes compare to that of 3 generations ago in my family.

Comment: My daughter (17) loves this. She has only made one dish but it was excellent and she had so much fun making. It is a great tool for anyone wishing to experiment and learn in the kitchen.

Summary: Not very useful
Comment: I bought this when it was for sale on the site for $5. I'm glad I didn't pay full price for it as I have not yet used it to cook with. It is not very practical in this format. I'm used to pulling up a recipe out of a book, my notebook of favorites, a website, or my file I keep in Microsoft OneNote. I don't think of using my Nintendo when I'm planning what to make for dinner. This program is more of a novelty than something useful.
